    About the standard

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) accredits Control Union Certifications for the National Organic Program (NOP). USDA-NOP certification is required for exporting organic products to the United States.

    Organic farming is a way of producing food that respects natural life cycles. It minimises the human impact on the environment and operates as naturally as possible without using GMO.

    USDA-NOP certification is required across the entire supply chain in India. All organic products exported from India to the USA must be accompanied by an electronically issued import certificate. Import certificates are only issued to clients certified under USDA-NOP regulations by an accredited certification body.

    Program Documents

    USDA-NOP regulations, as outlined in 7 CFR Part 205, are currently in effect. Another important document is the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Products, which specifies the products permitted and prohibited for use under USDA-NOP regulations. In March 2023, USDA-NOP introduced significant changes with the implementation of the Strengthening of Enforcement (SOE) initiative, which will take effect on March 19, 2024. Scope certificates and import certificates for USDA-NOP are issued through the Organic Integrity Database.
