About the certification
The European Union’s organic production standards have evolved to ensure higher transparency, sustainability, and consumer trust. Until December 31, 2021, organic farming in the EU was regulated under Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007, along with its implementing rules No. 889/2008 and No. 1235/2008, which covered production, labeling, control, and imports.
To strengthen organic practices and improve traceability, the EU introduced Regulation (EU) 2018/848, which came into effect on January 1, 2022. This regulation replaces the previous framework, setting new, harmonized standards for organic production, certification, and trade across the EU.
How you benefit
Europe is the second-largest export market for organic products grown in India and also the second-largest consumer of organic food products globally. This presents significant opportunities for exporters targeting the European market. Any organic product from a third country entering Europe must meet EU certification requirements. Obtaining EU Organic certification allows exporters to access and sell their products in Europe.
